The course provides the necessary training and skills for the safe conduct of navigation in polar waters, knowledge of safety and emergency aspects,in accordance with Regulation V/4 of the Annex to the STCW’78, in its updated version and the corresponding Section A-V/4 of the STCW’78.

The basic training course shall last not less than 32 hours in four days, of which seven hours for the development of the activity’ practice relative to the basic knowledge and ability’ to operate and maneuver the ship in the ice.

The basic training certificate shall be valid for five years.

Renewal may be obtained by attending a refresher course.

The course is open to master, first deck officers and deck officers responsible for watchkeeping at sea, serving on board vessels operating in polar waters in relation to the concentration of ice and the type of unit according to Chapter 12, paragraph 12.3 of the Polar Code and as follows:

For gas tankers, oil tankers, chemical tankers and passenger ships, basic training is required for skippers, first deck officers and deck officers responsible for a navigational watch.

The course provides the necessary training and skills for the safe conduct of navigation in polar waters, knowledge of safety and emergency aspects, in accordance with the provisions of Regulation V/4 of the STCW’D 78, in its updated version and the corresponding Section A-V/4 of the STCW 78.

The advanced training course, has a duration of 28 hours, articulated in four days, of which 12 hours for the development of the’ practical activity’ relative to the knowledge and ability’ to lead and maneuver the ship in the ice.

The advanced training certificate shall be valid for five years.

Renewal may be obtained by attending a refresher course.

Masters and first deck officers on board vessels operating in polar waters may participate in the course in relation to the concentration of ice and the type of vessel in accordance with Chapter 12, paragraph 12.3 of the Polar Code and as follows:

For gas tankers, tankers, chemical tankers and passenger ships and other types of ships, advanced training for Commanders and First Officers of deck is required.

In addition, any candidate wishing to take the advanced course must:

  1. hold a basic POLAR CODE training certificate.
  2. have completed at least two months of navigation in polar waters or in equivalent navigation ( means navigation carried out above 58° parallel North)on-deck duty at management level or on-call duty at operational level;

Equivalent navigation is considered acceptable only as a start-up of the certification system and until 1°September 2019.
