Fire Prevention and fire fighting aim to transmit the techniques fireproof, the use of the extinguishers, of the material and of the equipments fireproof. The personnel is trained to face fires in open spaces and in local closed, besides the formalities of help and rescue of wounded.

The base  course has a duration of 15 hours during which the trainees will acquire the following competences:

  1. To reduce the risk of fire and to maintain a suitable state of operational promptness to answer to situations of emergency owed to fires.
  2. To fight and to extinguish the fire.
  3. Practical training.

Every trainee will effect the following practical training:
1. Use of various types of portable extinguishers;
2. Use of the breathing apparatus;
3. Turning off sets on fire of small dimensions (for es. fires of electric origin, fires from liquid and gaseous hydrocarbons);
4. Turning off sets on fire of great dimensions with the employment of water, using fire hose to full throw and rain;
5. Turning off a fire with the foam, dust and other fit chemical agent;
6. To enter and to cross with belt and safety cable, but without breathing apparatus, a place in which high expansion foam has been introduced till its filling;
7. To fight the fire in the closed spaces full of smoke wearing the breathing apparatus;
8. Turning off of a fire in a simulated engine room, invaded by the fire and thick smoke;
9. Turning off of a fire from hydrocarbons (oil) with rain fire-hose, dust’s atomizers chemistry or foam;
10. Recovery of  injured in a space full of smoke, wearing the breathing apparatus;
For the commanders, the officers and every other maritime destined to embark on board of tanker (oil-tankers, chemical tankers and gas tankers), an integration it is planned for the practical training to develop the following knowledges:

1. to organize and to direct the teams fireproof, through the simulation of the various typologies firefighting on board;
2. to use the fixed systems on board like foam, dust, sprinkled water, CO2;
3. to use the portable equipments for the extinction of fires.

The certificate has a duration of  5 years. The seafarers holding an expired certificate, every five years must show to have maintained the level of in-demand training through the frequency of a course of updating (refresher training).

The course foresees different techniques of teaching: frontal lessons for the understanding of the theoretical knowledges, interrogations to verify the understanding of the matters of the course, practical (single and to teams) exercises on the firefighting field.

The course fireproof base is  developed in compliance with:


the rule VI/1, paragraph 1 and VI/3 of the attached one to the Convention STCW’ 78  and to the corresponding sections /1.2.1.1.2

and to-VI/3 of the code STCW, as well as the organization firefighting on board of the oil tanker

  • Belong to staff assigned to serve on board ships under the STCW 78 Convention and its amended version.

The advanced fire-fighting course shall be reserved for masters, officers and any other seafarers designated to direct fire-fighting operations on board, who, after obtaining the certificate relating to the basic fire-fighting course, shall receive advanced fire-fighting training, with particular reference to the organisations, operational mode of intervention, fire-fighting team management.

The duration of the basic fire-fighting course is 29 hours during which the trainees will acquire the following skills:

Direction and control of fire operations on board ships.
Organisation and training of firefighting team.
Inspection and maintenance of fire detection and extinguishing systems and equipment.
Investigations and reports of accidents involving fires on board.
For masters, officers and any other seafarers assigned to embark on tankers (oil tankers, chemical tankers and gas tankers), an addition to practical training shall be provided to develop the following knowledge:

1. organize and direct fire-fighting teams by simulating the various types of fire fighting on board;
2. use fixed foam, powder, sprinkled and CO2 systems;
3. use portable and mobile fire-fighting equipment;
Training shall be valid for five years. Every five years, the seafarer in possession of the certificate shall demonstrate that he has maintained the required level of training by attending a refresher training course (refresher training).

The course includes different teaching techniques: lectures for the understanding of theoretical knowledge, questions to verify the understanding of the topics related to the course, practical exercises (single and team) on the firefighting area.

The advanced fire-fighting course shall be conducted in accordance with:

Regulation VI/1, paragraphs 1 and VI/3 of the Annex to the STCW’ 78 in its updated version and to the corresponding Sections A-VI/1.2.1.1.2 and A-VI/3 of the STCW Code, as well as the fire organisation on board oil tankers, chemical and gas tankers in accordance with Regulation V/1-1.2 and V/1-2.2 of the Annex to the STCW’78 in its amended version and the corresponding Sections A V/1-1.1 and A-V/1-2.1 of the STCW Code internal ‘quality management’ procedures, complying with the requirements of UNI/EN/ISO 9001.

The following requirements are compulsory to enter the course:

  • Belong to staff assigned to serve on board ships under the STCW 78 Convention and its amended version.
  • the basic fire fighting certificate still valid.

The courses are weekly organized except the second, third week of August and the Christmas holiday season. In addition, courses are organized on request through private or corporate bookings.
