The course provides the necessary training and skills for the safe conduct of navigation in polar waters, knowledge of safety and emergency aspects,in accordance with Regulation V\/4 of the Annex to the STCW’78, in its updated version and the corresponding Section A-V\/4 of the STCW’78.<\/span><\/p>\n

The basic training course shall last not less than 32 hours in four days, of which seven hours for the development of the activity’ practice relative to the basic knowledge and ability’ to operate and maneuver the ship in the ice.<\/span><\/p>\n

The basic training certificate shall be valid for five years.<\/span><\/p>\n

Renewal may be obtained by attending a refresher course.<\/span><\/p>\n

The course is open to master, first deck officers and deck officers responsible for watchkeeping at sea, serving on board vessels operating in polar waters in relation to the concentration of ice and the type of unit according to Chapter 12, paragraph 12.3 of the Polar Code and as follows:<\/p>\n

-Open waters<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t

Open waters as defined in point 2.10 of the Polar Code :<\/p>\n

For gas tankers, oil tankers, chemical tankers and passenger ships, basic training is required for skippers, first deck officers and deck officers responsible for a navigational watch.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n

The course provides the necessary training and skills for the safe conduct of navigation in polar waters, knowledge of safety and emergency aspects, in accordance with the provisions of Regulation V\/4 of the STCW\u2019D 78, in its updated version and the corresponding Section A-V\/4 of the STCW 78.<\/span><\/p>\n

The advanced training course has a duration of 28 hours, articulated in four days, of which 12 hours for the development of the practical activities related to the knowledge and ability to lead and manoeuvre the ship in the ice.<\/span><\/p>\n

The advanced training certificate shall be valid for five years.<\/span><\/p>\n

Renewal may be obtained by attending a refresher course.<\/span><\/p>\n

Masters and first deck officers on board vessels operating in polar waters may participate in the course in relation to the concentration of ice and the type of vessel in accordance with Chapter 12, paragraph 12.3 of the Polar Code and as follows:<\/p>\n

In addition, any candidate wishing to take the advanced course must:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. hold a basic POLAR CODE training certificate.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. have completed at least two months of navigation in polar waters or in equivalent navigation ( it means navigation carried out above 58\u00b0 parallel North)on-deck duty at management level or on-call duty at the operational level;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Equivalent navigation is considered acceptable only as a start-up of the certification system and until 1\u00b0September 2019.<\/span><\/p>\n
